Of ‘amazing’ atmosphere, leader Virat Kohli, ABD’s keeping avatar: The Chronicles of RCB 2.0 by Washington Sundar

1 week ago 3

Washington Sundar of Royal Challengers Bangalore is now more than just an off-spinner in the side, he is now a phenomenon. Sundar, lovingly called ‘Washi, has always been known for his brilliant expertise in the Powerplay. Now that RCB is really tapping into that advantage that Washington has to provide, he is also bagging his desired wickets.

Tagged as not a natural wicket-taker by many, RCB’s own Washington Sundar has outgrown and overhauled that label and as we saw his exceptional figures of 4-0-20-2 against KKR. But Washington says it’s just a part of his natural game that has led him to this day when he is playing the dual role of an economical checker of runs and also a leading wicket-taker for the team like legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) 2.0 in IPL 2020

Right after RCB crushed KKR by 82 runs to rise up the ranks in the points table and announce war in the IPL 2020 competition, there was yet another refreshing video on RCB’s official Twitter handle at 9 am the next day. Washington gives us a walkthrough of the amazing team atmosphere and what really makes this team RCB 2.0.

“It feels amazing [to be a part of RCB 2.0]. We always spend a lot of time in the team room together doing a lot of team bonding activities. I think in terms of that, our management has done wonders for us, in terms of having us all together most of the times. And we did have 2-3 weeks of preparation also just head of the start of IPL 2020,” Washington said.

“I think everything together helped us as a team and also the atmosphere’s been very good. The atmosphere has been good probably because of the preparation that we’ve put in and also the fact that we’ve been together right from the start. I’m sure this will continue to be the same throughout the rest of the season. “

Washington: A brilliant mind with the bat and ball

When India Today asked him about how would ‘Washi the batsman’ tackle ‘Washi the bowler’ in the Powerplay, the 21-year-old came up with a quirky reply followed with a good laugh from both ends of the virtual press conference.

“Well, I really wouldn’t want to answer that question,” he chuckled. “But, yeah, I also want to think from a batsman’s point of view because I also have faced a lot of bowlers who bowl like me so. But probably that particular thing has kept me going has kept me guessing always. I would say, it’s all about improving, all about evolving with time and experience. So that’s what I’ve been trying to do.”

The ABD factor in RCB 2.0

Washington, who pledges to have the drive was rather swift to answer, with his whole heart, when asked about the role of the star player AB de Villiers behind the stumps. He answered ‘it’s amazing!’ from the bottom of his heart. After all, only a bowler would know best how much advantageous it really for a spinner to have a golden athlete like AB de Villiers donning the keeping gloves and safeguarding from behind the stumps,

“It’s amazing. It’s also one of the reasons our atmosphere is so energetic on the field. And he does share a lot of ideas and I think all in all AB and Virat have a lot of conversations during the games and everything’s worked well so far for us. Hopefully, this continues throughout the rest of the season,” Washington wishfully added.
