IPL 2020: Steve Smith a fantastic player - Rajasthan Royals not worried about captain's ordinary batting form

1 week ago 6

Rajasthan Royals are rooted to the 7th spot of the IPL 2020 points table after just 3 wins in 8 matches. The former champions threw away a golden opportunity to collect 2 points when they imploded during a 162-run chase against Delhi Capitals in Dubai on Wednesday.

Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Robin Uthappa and Sanju Samson got starts but none of them were able to convert them into match-winning knocks. The Royals' batting has come under pressure as their captain Steve Smith has been woefully out of form in IPL 2020.

On Wednesday, the Royals got off to a flyer but they lost the wickets of Jos Buttler and Steve Smith in quick succession to hand over the advantage in the powerplay to the Delhi Capitals. In the end, the Royals lost by just 13 runs after some fine death bowling from the table-toppers.

Smith managed just 1 run and it was his fifty single-digit score of IPL 2020. Smith began the season on a high, hitting two back-to-back fifties against Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab. His scores since the fifty against KXIP -- 3, 5, 6, 24, 5, 1. The skipper's form (or the lack of it) has put pressure on the inexperienced middle-order. Despite Rahul Tewatia and Riyan Parag showing courage in the middle order, Royals have paid the price for poor starts in the ongoing season.

However, Royals' spin consultant Sairaj Bahutule said the franchise is confident that its skipper, Smith will return to form and contribute to the team's success in the upcoming games.

"He is a fantastic captain, fantastic player as well. He had a good start, got some runs there. He is a guy who works on his game hard. I am sure in the coming games, he will make it count and score the runs for us," Bahutule said.

Rajasthan Royals need to win at least 4 of their upcoming 6 matches as the play-offs race is looking tighter than ever. The Royals, along with the Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are tied on points each but a poorer Net Run Rate means Smith's men are the 2nd-last spot.

Bahutule rued not getting past the finish line against Delhi Capitals but he is confident the Royals will be able to get the job done and reach the play-offs.

"This game, we should have got those runs. It's obviously disappointing. THe boys are hurting but the only way for us is up from here. We have 6 more games to go and we have to make sure we play good cricket in the coming games. We need to win at least 4 or 5 games in the remaining 6. We will try doing that," Bahutule said.
