The knockout stages of Indian Premier League 2020 begin with 4-time Champions Mumbai Indians taking on Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1 in Dubai on Thursday. Delhi Capitals lost both their league matches against Rohit Sharma's team and they would want to start afresh and deliver on the big day against the defending champions.
Mumbai Indians have been the most dominant side in the IPL as the defending champions have been consistently putting up all-round performances to top the table with 18 points. Delhi Capitals started off pretty well as they marched their way to 14 points but then, had a tumble of sorts, losing 4 successive games before sealing playoffs berth by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Boult-Bumrah vs Rabada-Nortje
Delhi Capitals' have marched to their 2nd straight playoffs largely due to the South African pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje while Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult have been superb for the four-time IPL winners this season.— Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) November 5, 2020
Along with his compatriot Anrich Nortje, Rabada has formed one of the most lethal pace partnerships in the 13th edition of the IPL extravaganza. The South African duo have shared 44 wickets between them in the league stage.
For Mumbai, Bumrah and Boult have filled in the role of senior pacers quite comfortably with 23 and 16 wickets to their names. Bumrah and Boult have been phenomenal for the four-time champions in the league stage.
Delhi's middle-order conundrum
The lack of firepower in their middle-order batsmen could be one of the biggest concerns for the Delhi Capitals. Prithvi Shaw's tendency to throw away his wicket, Rishabh Pant, Shimron Hetmyer poor run with the bat has not helped the Capitals.— Delhi Capitals (Tweeting from ) (@DelhiCapitals) November 5, 2020
Mumbai Indians boast of seasoned pinch hitters like Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya in their middle but Delhi has been devoid of any such show from the likes of Hetmyer, Pant and Marcus Stoinis. On the top, Shaw has had his problems facing Boult, who has had the youngster’s number in both the league games.
R Ashwin's injury a concern for Delhi
Delhi Capitals would be hoping that Ravichandran Ashwin recovers from his injury and is able to take the field against the Mumbai Indians tonight. If not, they might have to include the inexperienced Pravin Dubey or play Sandeep Lamichhane at the expense of Daniel Sams.
Dubai's wicket has been sluggish in nature and it could test the batsmen. Dew may an important role for the team's batting second. The temperature is expected to hover around the late 20s, which shouldn't be testing on the players.
