Chris Gayle's blockbuster IPL 2020 campaign came to an end on Sunday as Kings XI Punjab fluffed a good opportunity to reach the play-offs. KL Rahul's men crashed out of the tournament after being handed a 9-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings in their must-win match.

Chris Gayle ended his campaign with 288 runs in just 7 matches, averaging in excess of 40. Gayle nearly got to his 7th IPL hundred but he fell short of the 3-figure score by just 1 run in their tie against the Rajasthan Royals. Gayle made a game-changing impact as he turned the fortunes of Kings XI Punjab by adding firepower to the batting unit despite not playing at his usual opener's spot.

The West Indies star looked determined to make a statement as he was not picked for KXIP's first 7 matches. Despite not playing competitive cricket after January, Gayle was able to get going straight away.

On Monday, Chris Gayle took to social media and sent a message to his fans, urging them to keep following IPL 2020 despite his season coming to an end early.

"Plz continue to watch IPL even though my season has come to an end. Thank you #UniverseBoss," Gayle wrote.

A section of fans seemingly misinterpreted Gayle's message as they began speculating the West Indies star's retirement. Messages urging Gayle not to retire were posted in the comment section.

"So it means You are RETIRING @henrygayle .Please Don’t do #UniverseBoss Never Retire from people hearts," a fan wrote.

"Retiring? Pls play one more season boss," another fan wrote.

Despite turning 41, Gayle looks hungry for more success. The West Indies great had said during his campaign that he wants to lay his hands on an IPL trophy.

Gayle had candidly mentioned that the youngsters in the Kings XI Punjab side had asked him not to retire after witnessing his exploits at IPL 2020. Notably, KXIP batsman Mandeep Singh said he had asked Gayle to never consider retirement.

"He (Gayle) should never retire. He is always in great touch. I have never seen him struggle. He is probably the greatest T20 player ever," Mandeep had said.

Despite managing to stitch a remarkable comeback with 5 wins on the trot, Kings XI Punjab failed to reach the play-offs after they were handed big defeats in their last two outings.
