5 Super Overs in 56 matches: IPL 2020 produces most twists and turns in closest-ever edition

4 weeks ago 7

The Indian Premier League 2020 is almost near its end with just 4 matches to go before a champion is crowned. High-octane action took place in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah over the course of 49 days with 8 teams fighting for the coveted IPL trophy.

This season of the IPL was the closest ever in the tournament's history with the 13th edition being the first in which all teams registered at least 6 wins from 14 matches in the league stage.

It took the final day of the league stage to decide the four teams for the playoffs. That just goes to show how close the competition was this year.

Just a mere look at the number of Super Overs that were played out in IPL 2020 proves how tough it was for all the teams to have the better of each other.

12 editions of the IPL took place before this season with 9 Super Overs played in total. There were no Super Overs in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2018.

Two Super Overs each were played in the 2009 and 2013 editions. This year alone the fans got to see 5 Super overs in total with 3 played in a single day on October 18.

For the first time in the history of the IPL, 2 Super Overs were played in a single match between Kings XI Punjab and Mumba Indians. This happened right after the first match on October 18 also witnessed a Super Over between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders, but we'll get to that a little later.

Both teams were tied on 176 for the loss of 6 wickets in normal time which led to the first Super Over.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled a brilliant over, removing KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran to restrict KXIP to just 5 runs. Mohammed Shami returned the favour with another yorker-filled over, giving away just 5 runs as Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock fluffed what seemed an easy chase. De Kock was run out when MI needed 2 runs from the final ball of the 1st Super Over.

It was only the second time in IPL history that the Super Over was also tied. Happened in the RR - KKR game in 2014 at Abu Dhabi. However, RR were declared winners on the boundary count on that occasion before the rules were changed in 2019.

That led to some confusion regarding the rules and finally the teams played came out on the field for the 2nd Super Over in which KXIP outclassed MI thanks to Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal's partnership.

Agarwal stopped a six with a stunning save at the deep mid-wicket boundary in Chris Jordan's over as Mumbai Indians were restricted to 11 runs. In reply, Chris Gayle smashed Trent Boult for a six in the first ball and Mayank Agarwal did the rest with 2 boundaries to win the game for KXIP.

Kolkata Knight Riders pipped Sunrisers Hyderabad in a Super Over, just a few hours before the KXIP vs MI thriller. Lockie Ferguson did not put a foot wrong in his first match for KKR and blew away SRH with his pace in normal time and in the Super Over.

Ferguson first picked up 3 wickets in the tied contest where both SRH and KKR finished with 163 on the board. As the match slipped into the Super Over, Ferguson ended Sunrisers Hyderabad's chances in just 3 balls, rattling the wickets twice to send back David Warner and Abdul Samad.

SRH managed just 2 runs in the Super Over after which Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan came up with a sensible approach in the chase against Rashid Khan to help them seal 2 points.

The tied contest between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in Dubai on September 28 was the second instance this season when a Super Over was played to decide the winner. Both teams were tied on 201 in their allotted 20 overs due to which a Super Over had to be played.

Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya came in to open the batting in the Super Over for Mumbai and managed to score 7 runs from it. Bangalore trusted with AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli with the responsibility.

After 2 singles and a dot ball, de Villiers smashed a 4 on the 4th delivery to make it 2 from 2. A single followed on the 5th ball. One was needed off the final delivery and captain Virat Kohli rose up to the occasion to wash off his poor 11-ball 3-run knock a few hours ago and finished the match with his first boundary of the IPL 2020 season.

In a game of stunning cameos and see-saw battles, KXIP opener Mayank Agarwal's heroics (89 off 60) went in vain, as his team failed to overhaul the 158-run target in 20 overs again Delhi Capitals, and the 2nd contest of the season entered the Super Over.

In the Super Over, Kagiso Rabada managed to dismiss KXIP skipper KL Rahul and batsman Nicholas Pooran on successive deliveries, to leave DC with a paltry target of 3 runs.

The KL Rahul-led team posted the lowest Super Over score in IPL history - 2. Chasing, Delhi easily hunted down the three-run target to start their campaign with a thrilling victory.
